Nayara Resorts: Setting the Gold Standard for Luxury Resorts in Costa Rica and Beyond
Nestled in the shadow of Arenal Volcano’s breathtaking beauty, Nayara in Costa Rica has redefined the very essence of luxury and service in the world of hospitality. With a triumphant trio of properties – Nayara Gardens, Nayara Springs, and Nayara Tented Camp – this esteemed resort collection has not only crafted a distinct and abundant experience for its guests but has also raised the bar for luxury resorts in Costa Rica and across Latin America. Today, our properties extend to Panama’s Nayara Bocas del Toro, Nayara Alto Atacama in Chile’s Atacama Desert, and Nayara Hangaroa on the World Heritage Site of Easter Island.
To delve into Nayara’s industry-defining Vision of Service, we had the honor of engaging in a conversation with Jairo Quesada, the Resort Manager of Nayara Resorts in Costa Rica, to explore the history, values, and vision that have solidified this remarkable group of luxury resorts as the epitome of unparalleled service and grandeur. Mr. Quesada has been part of the company and its growth since the very earliest days, with a story that is both personal and filled with business leadership.
A Sit Down with Nayara’s Resort Manager
So great to connect with you, Mr. Quesada. Let’s start with an easy question: how long have you been with Nayara Resorts?
I have been with Nayara since 2008. I started as the front desk supervisor and worked my way up. I have been Resort Manager for three years.
When you started you were not a resort chain, just a small(ish) hotel in an area with many similar-sized properties. How did you morph into what you are now?
Yes, when I started, we had only one property, Nayara Gardens, and our staff was around 30 people in total. Back then we were a good “local” hotel: 25 rooms, no real amenities to speak of, but an incredible location. We were all cross-trained in so many things because you needed to be there for your guests at all times. That idea of understanding all parts of the property is still a large component today.
So even then, the idea of service was central to the hotel’s approach.
Yes, I remember having meetings with our owners, who wanted to have the best customer service in the area to help us stand out from all the other hotels of our size. We were the first hotel in the area to offer free international calls, and the first to offer free high-speed internet. But even more than this, the entire team believed that we needed to offer amenities and details that nobody else was offering at the time, to go above and beyond.
That’s a big step when you are a smaller property.
You know, 2008 was during the financial crisis but even then, we never thought about nickel and diming our customers. If it helped give the best service, we wanted to do all we could. And little by little, we became known for our customer service.
Why Service is Important to Us
Why was this important to you as a company and as staff?
We knew by offering those details, guests would fall in love with what we did, spread the word, and come back to see us again. That word of mouth not only helped put us on the map, but it helped us establish a vision of service that is truly the key to our resorts today. Within two years we were known as the hotel in Arenal..
Tell me about growing pains. A lot of companies see their quality drop when they expand. Did you?
No, quite the contrary. In 2009/10 we started construction on a 2nd phase of Nayara Gardens. We realized that while we were on the map in the region, we could not only grow larger, but also expand our focus towards luxury and be known as a true luxury destination in Arenal, in Costa Rica, and in Central America.
Then in 2010, we started construction on Nayara Springs, with the vision of making this the most luxurious hotel in Costa Rica. Our attention to detail and putting customer service and quality first and foremost helped us fine-tune what we did and how we did it. We knew we were moving in the right direction when Travel & Leisure put us on their cover as one of the top hotels in the world within one year of opening Nayara Springs.
But you didn’t stop with two properties in the region, why did you add Nayara Tented Camp?
By 2016 we were surely on the luxury map with many awards and loyal patrons. But our owners had a vision to have something totally different for this region – a true African safari experience in the Costa Rican rainforest. With Tented Camp we wanted to compete with the most luxurious brands in the world. But not at the risk of losing our vision of service. And that’s what makes Tented Camp – and all our properties – so special: we never lost our vision, only expanded it.
Fostering a Spirit of Service Every Day
I have to say that I’ve stayed at a lot of properties that say this, but you do more than talk the talk, you truly walk the walk. Why?
Hmmm, that’s a good question. I will say it this way: “Never say no.” If you want to be more than just a place people come to vacation, if you want to be a special place, an inviting place, you need to be willing to find a way to say “yes”. Like wanting something not on the menu, a dream activity you don’t know is possible, or just the little things in a room to make a couple feel special and cared for. If it is possible (and sometimes if it seems it isn’t) we’ll figure out how to make it a “yes.”
How do you instill this vision into your team as you’ve grown?
When we hire anyone in the company – be they in a front-of-house position or someone behind the scenes, we look to understand their passions and how we can help them grow. To us we are not hiring for a position, but for a career. Look at me, I’ve been here since 2008 and I now oversee all our Costa Rica properties. We believe that everyone should be hired with this in mind. And because of that, we have very little turnover. People want to be here because we all believe in our mission and our values.
But it goes beyond that. I mentioned that when we were small, we all jumped in to do what needed to be done, not just what our job description said. We still do that today. We want everyone to learn about our resorts, our guests, our vision of service. So, every person – at all levels – spends time across the property. All will clean a room, all will serve a guest, and all will work front and back of the house, so we understand what it takes to be able to say “yes”, and so we are all in this together. To me, that is something unique about our vision of service.
I’m sure your competition has copied your success.
For sure they have. But we don’t care if they do, because we think this is what everyone should be doing. But I will say that we often get staff coming from other hotels to stay and very frequently they will say “Now I get it! I see why you are so special.” And this type of service doesn’t happen overnight. You can’t say “we are going to be” and become that. It has taken us many years to get to this point. It has taken complete buy-in from our teams. And a family commitment from management to those who are here in any capacity to put this vision first. So that’s why I smile when they say, “I get it now.”
Serving Our Community and the Natural World Around Us
How do you take this vision of service beyond the grounds of the resorts?
We have over 520 staff right now, and 90% of us are from this area, and the vast majority of our staff live in the surrounding communities. Our belief is that we have a responsibility to support our community and those we call our coworkers, our neighbors, and our family. That means we work with local producers and help them grow their businesses and their level of service as we grow. It means we work with local farmers to help them understand the needs and demands of a luxury property. It means we support local schools and charities. It’s why we have so little turnover. We are a true part of this community, and we want people to know they have a future both at Nayara Resorts and in this region.
OK, we’ve talked about your vision of service to your guests, your vision of service to your team, and your community, but there is another area I’d like to touch on and that’s how this translates to where your properties are located. How do you serve the natural habitat?
I’m not sure if you know but there was a time when Costa Rica didn’t value its natural lands and a great deal of it was cut down for timber, farming, etc. As a country, this has changed dramatically, and we pride ourselves here at our Arenal properties, and across all our resorts, on our focus on the land and the animals that surround us.
For example, here in our area around Arenal Volcano, we have a sustainability team that cleans rivers, cleans streets, and provides education on sustainability, recycling, and clean energy. To us, luxury isn’t just having a very nice property but having a true relationship and respect for the world around us, including our commitment to being carbon-neutral properties. Knowing that we have a responsibility and hope that value translates for our guests and those we work with.
Since I joined the company in 2008, we have always had a reforestation project, including having a natural corridor from our properties, through the primary forests to the Arenal River. And we now see lands teeming with life that disappear with deforestation.
We believe there is a difference between having a hotel and being true partners with the world around us. It’s about supporting our team and our community, it’s about protecting and enhancing our environment, and it’s about having (as a company) a unique sense of self and purpose.
This is something you do at Arenal, but how has it translated to the properties in Panama and Chile?
We have talked a lot about how we train our teams here in Arenal. But we do this same thing across all our properties. Our team trains and experiences all facets of our properties in Bocas del Toro, the Atacama Desert, and on Easter Island, and their teams come to train here at Nayara Gardens, Springs, and Tented Camp.
But we aren’t just training our staff for jobs. As I said, we look to support careers in our team. The front desk managers of today will be resort managers of the future. Maybe here, maybe at Alto Atacama, or another property. This is how our vision of service becomes a true value and part of the DNA of all who work with Nayara Resorts. I am incredibly proud of this, and how it translates to the experiences of our guests.
Our Guiding Vision
Today, this vision of service remains Nayara Resorts’ north star. And it is no wonder that the resorts have earned awards from across the travel spectrum, as well as a loyal following. When you hear from people like Jairo you understand the unique perspective that runs through all who serve and interact with their properties.
In the next section, we’ll explore how we bring this vision of service to life.
Defining Memories for a Lifetime: Nayara’s Seven Elements of Place
Nayara Resorts has locations in four extraordinary destinations — Bocas del Toro in Panama, Arenal in Costa Rica, Easter Island, and the Atacama Desert in Chile. But it wasn’t always that way. Nayara started as a single resort in the rainforest of Arenal, and as we've expanded, we’ve maintained a constant commitment to crafting remarkable experiences, with personalized service, a dedication to excellence, and a close attention to detail.
But what truly makes each Nayara resort unique and memorable is the fact that each captures the essence of its surroundings. And that’s not by accident — helping our guests truly experience these world-renowned destinations is built into each resort's very fabric and design. Why? Because we believe in creating a connection that endures, wherever you visit.
In this article, we’ll focus on seven key elements of travel — cuisine, adventure, learning, nature, wellness, connection, and comfort — and how each of them can reveal and capture the essence of these fascinating destinations. These elements shape an experience as unique as the countries and cultures surrounding each Nayara resort.
Connecting to Culture and Surroundings Through Cuisine
When it comes to crafting cuisine that truly encapsulates a sense of place, Nayara Resorts takes a thoughtful approach. Our culinary experience takes into account various elements, each carefully woven together to embrace the unique character of each destination. Our culinary team starts by immersing themselves in the surrounding culture, tapping into the rich tapestry of traditions, flavors, and stories that define the locale.
Local, fresh ingredients aren't just a choice; they're a commitment to authenticity. We believe in the power of the nearby fields, markets, and waters to shape not just our menus but the very essence of our dishes. Local perspectives on nourishment and its purpose become our guiding light, ensuring that every bite reflects a deeper connection to the community and its culinary heritage.
In each dish, we pay homage to tradition while elevating our skilled and inspired chefs to create something entirely new. It's a delicate balance that captures the destination's spirit while offering a fresh perspective. Each element — the cultural immersion, reliance on local ingredients, respect for nourishment, and the blend of tradition and innovation — is a brushstroke on the canvas of the local experience.
From the first welcoming smile and meticulous presentation to thoughtful pairings and that unforgettable first bite, every aspect of your culinary journey at Nayara Resorts is a deliberate invitation. It's not just a meal; it's a vision of cuisine designed to welcome you to the heart of our destination.
A Sense of Unique Adventure Throughout Your Journey
Travel at its core is an adventure — a deliberate step beyond the familiar, an exploration of new perspectives. Nayara Resorts embraces this, understanding that each journey is an opportunity to break free from the ordinary and embrace the extraordinary. We want your journey with us to be an immersive experience, a tale of exploration that leaves an indelible mark on your memory.
Each activity is crafted to put you in touch with that sense of adventure, to create moments that are as varied as they are unforgettable. It's not just about the heart-pounding excitement; it's about the richness of nature, the vibrance of new cultures, and the awe-inspiring beauty that surrounds you.
Let's take a glimpse into some of the types of adventures that await at each Nayara destination:
Easter Island: Embark on a private tour of the iconic Moai statues, delving into the mysteries of this remote island's history and culture.
Bocas del Toro: Snorkel through the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, exploring vibrant coral reefs and encountering an array of marine life.
Atacama Desert: Witness the celestial beauty of the night sky with an exclusive stargazing experience, guided by our own on-staff astronomers.
Arenal Rainforest: Soar above the treetops on a zip-line adventure, offering not only an adrenaline rush but also breathtaking views of the lush rainforest.
Each of these activities is just a taste of the myriad ways you can experience these unforgettable destinations. It's about crafting an adventure that resonates with you, ensuring that your journey with Nayara Resorts is as unique as the places we call home.
Gaining Fresh Perspectives and New Skills
Travel is a journey of adventure as much as it is one of discovery, and here at Nayara Resorts we believe that a trip devoid of learning is a missed opportunity. Knowledge gained during a journey can cement these new experiences in your memory for years to come.
For this reason, learning is a continuous thread woven into the fabric of your journey, from the very start to the final farewell. It's evident in the thoughtfully curated decor and design of our resorts, reflecting the nuances of each destination. The seven elements we explore in this article are another gateway to learning about these places, pillars that invite you to delve deeper into the culture, nature, and essence of the place you're visiting.
And learning isn’t just woven into your surroundings, or found through questions to our knowledgeable staff. We also offer the opportunity to learn through experiences. Whether you opt for a more traditional tour, delving into the culture, ecology, and history of our destinations, or prefer a hands-on approach to acquiring new skills, we've curated experiences that will open your mind to new information, skills, and ways of thinking that will last long after you leave.
Engaging with the Natural World
Every corner of the globe tells a unique story, a history where humanity and nature intertwine, sometimes intimately, and sometimes at a distance. At Nayara Resorts, we consider ourselves fortunate to be nestled in some of the most captivating, vibrant, and biologically complex ecosystems on Earth, all just waiting to be discovered.
Easter Island:
Easter Island is a living showcase of endemic species, with a unique ecology that speaks volumes about its ancient past. Whether above the waves or beneath them, you’ll discover unique animals and pristine ecosystems, natural wonders that have stood the test of time.
Bocas del Toro:
In Bocas del Toro, vibrant coral reefs along the archipelago define a landscape that merges shorelines, shallow waters, and open seas to provide an awe-inspiring biodiversity just beneath the surface. Life is always changing here, with the wind, the water, and the tides, meaning every hour brings new conditions and something new to discover.
Atacama Desert:
On the near-martian landscape of the Atacama Desert, life finds unconventional ways to thrive. The unique adaptations of flora and fauna in this arid landscape present a fascinating study of resilience and survival against the odds, one that’s worth digging into!
Arenal Rainforest:
In the heart of Costa Rica where two oceans and continents collide, the Arenal rainforest becomes a vibrant tapestry of life. The biodiversity (number of different species per square mile) and biodensity (amount of plant and animal organisms per square mile) is rivaled by few places on Earth, and researchers are discovering new plants and animals here every year.
You can immerse yourself in these ecosystems, where every rustle of leaves, ripple in the water, and peculiar adaptation tells a story, and leave feeling as though you’ve truly gotten to know the wild side of your destination.
“Spotting a sloth on their way to breakfast, or a serendipitous encounter with a rare bird while taking a dip in the pool are reminders that only here and now truly matter.”
– Nayara Resorts
Cultivating a Complete Sense of Wellness
In the increasingly global and interconnected world, we've come to understand that personal wellness is far from a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Nayara Resorts recognizes the beauty in diversity, realizing that different cultures hold unique wisdom regarding well-being. Our approach is to distill these learnings and craft wellness experiences that share the essence of these age-old practices with you.
There's an inherent wellness benefit in residing in remote places surrounded by nature. Away from the hustle and bustle, you can find solace in the tranquility of the natural world. Equally vital is the nourishment derived from fresh, healthy meals sourced from nearby farms, forests, and seas. We believe that the food you consume is a cornerstone of well-being, and we build that into our dining experience.
Pair this with thoughtfully crafted wellness experiences that tap into local knowledge, and you have a comprehensive opportunity to improve your overall well-being. Whether it's embracing the mindfulness practices of the region, partaking in rejuvenating spa treatments inspired by local traditions, or engaging in activities that harmonize with the natural surroundings, every element is designed to contribute to your holistic sense of wellness.
In all, Nayara Resorts invites you to step into these places where wellness is a lived experience and to connect with those places through your own journey of healing and well-being.
Connection with Self, Place, and Loved Ones
Travel is a journey of connection, whether that’s one of self-discovery, immersion in local traditions and community, shared moments with loved ones, or some combination of all three Nayara Resorts understands that these connections are the heartbeats of a meaningful journey.
As we mentioned above, the experiences we offer are designed to bring you closer not only to the natural beauty of your destination but also to the rich tapestry of local traditions and activities, and to yourself through personal wellness.
But our commitment to connection goes beyond that. Our knowledgeable staff and friendly guides aren't just here to be invisible servants — they thrive on sharing their own perspectives on living and working in some of the world's most desirable and beautiful places.
And amidst all these experiences, the foundation of connection on travel is the quality time you spend connecting with your loved ones. Whether it's the warmth of family connections, the intimacy of memories created with a partner, or the joy of forging new experiences with old friends, Nayara Resorts will give you the support you need to focus and be present.
When you find yourself in a truly vibrant, fully realized place, with the assurance that every detail has been handled for you, you can immerse yourself in what really matters during travel — making time to connect, savor, and create memories that will linger long after the journey is complete.
A Local Perspective on Comfort and Luxury
In Nayara Resorts' seven elements of place, the final piece is infusing all of the local essence that we’ve talked about so far into an experience of unparalleled comfort and luxury. We offer atmosphere, engagement, and experiences of world-class quality, tailored to each destination in a way that you simply couldn't find anywhere else on the globe.
This commitment extends beyond just high-thread counts, attentive service, and superlative amenities, to delve into what the locals truly understand to be special, comforting, and worthwhile.
Like taking time for a cup of locally sourced artisan coffee in your villa as you look out across Arenal, with fresh fruits and chocolate to snack on while toucans fly past your window.
Or lounging for long afternoons overlooking the crystal clear waters of Bocas del Toro, enjoying fresh tropical cocktails and bocas delivered to where you watch.
Enjoying the unforgettable starscape above you by the warmth and privacy of a fire, listening to the indigenous legends and how they've shaped the cultures that thrive in a strange land.
Or sharing in the ancient traditions of the Rapa Nui people while you dine on the delicacies served to the ancient kings and queens of Easter Island.
These are visions of luxury that you won't find unless you visit these vibrant destinations, and our goal is to bring them to you in a way that matches up to any accommodation, while bringing a unique character you couldn't find anywhere else in the world.
And in a way, this captures our perspective on all of the seven elements of place. To invite you to these destinations not just as a visitor, but as a traveler, one who's there to experience all that these incredible places have to offer. In some ways, it's daring -- to travel off the beaten path to locales unlike any on earth. But that is the essence of traveling with Nayara Resorts.
Nayara Resorts: A Culinary Journey of Excellence
Nayara Resorts has become synonymous with excellence in hospitality, luxury, amenities, and breathtaking natural beauty. Unsurprisingly, the dining experience at all six resorts plays a pivotal role in upholding this stellar reputation. Across the resorts, award-winning restaurants have set new standards for culinary excellence in their respective regions and countries.
Executive Chef William Weiss, who hails from the picturesque Alsace region of France and has trained at Michelin-starred establishments in France and Monaco leads this culinary expedition. Chef Weiss boasts a rich culinary pedigree that spans the globe and includes stints at renowned luxury properties such as the St-Regis in Australia, Shangri-La in Bora Bora, and a remarkable nine-year collaboration with the prestigious Michel Reybier Hospitality group in Switzerland. Currently based near Nayara's three Costa Rican properties, Chef Weiss continues to redefine the dining experience across the Nayara portfolio, drawing the attention of other world class chefs. We sat down with him to gain insights into Chef Weiss's inspiration.
“We have so many different fine dining restaurants across the Nayara Resorts that we have a global approach and global vision towards cuisine.”
Q: How does it feel transitioning from the Swiss Alps to the rainforests of Costa Rica's Arenal Volcano region?
Chef Weiss: “I was expecting more rain from the rainforest actually - that surprised me in a good way. (laugh) It feels alright here because I know what to expect, and I’m working with a great team. The supply chain (in a jungle, an island off the coast of Panama or far in the Pacific off Chile, or the driest desert in the world) is challenging so you have to be very resourceful and help train the suppliers to get the quality you want to get. But that is an interesting part of the job as well. It's quite satisfying to be part of it. (These areas are) growing up quickly and every year more are coming with a higher standard and expectation for quality. So we need to stay at the highest standards for our European, North American, and worldwide guests.”
The supply chain challenge is vividly exemplified at Nayara Hangaroa on Chile's Easter Island, where supplies arrive once every three to four weeks. "You really have to be resourceful with what you grow locally," Chef Weiss notes, referencing the locally sourced ingredients, including vegetables and Pacific fish, that contribute to the restaurant's unique offerings.
Q: What is the overall culinary approach at Nayara Resorts?
Chef Weiss: We have so many different restaurants that we have a global approach and global vision towards cuisine. Our goal is to offer all our guests could want on property – with both local/typical and international food. We are showing we can do something different - something unique and special.”
Q: I've noticed a strong emphasis on local products across the properties. Why is that important?
Chef Weiss: “While we have different concepts in (each of our) hotels, we wanted to have fine dining with a local twist: bringing something different and showcasing what we can do with local products in a unique way.”
A perfect example of this value and creative focus is the 7-course tasting menu at Nayara Springs’ fine dining restaurant, Amor Loco. “Every course has a dish and ingredients from different regions - introducing ingredients even some of our locals have never tasted, while also bringing in high-end plating and unusual concepts.”
Q: How do you describe your cooking style?
Chef Weiss: “At home I (tend to) cook quick and delicious. But at work, I like details, good ingredients, and great flavors. I believe in very straightforward cooking. Like if you are going to use an ingredient, don’t just give a “hint” of something, go bold and let the true flavor come through. And when we create dishes, we like things that may look very simple, and know that we think about things very technically.”
Q: You mentioned a commitment to the local communities. Can you elaborate?
Chef Weiss: “A big part of our identity (and commitment) is to be part of the local community and help our neighbors. We hire locally, we train locally, we source locally, and we all grow together to the next level. That is important to our owners and to me and my teams.”
A Different Take on Cuisine Than All-Inclusive Resorts:
Q: What can guests expect when dining at Nayara?
Chef Weiss: “(I) want our guests to enjoy the diversity we have (created) at the hotels: bringing together local and international cuisine for a perfect pairing - be that local seafood caught fresh each morning or locally-grown organic vegetables to wine tastings of locally harvested varietals. (In my opinion) no other hotel brings this combination of cuisine and experience together at the level we do at Nayara Resorts. Because it’s not just the food, it’s the entire experience and the “why” around what we do. We want to give a personalized experience that isn’t what you would expect from these regions or even these countries.“
Chef Weiss: "We want our guests to savor the diversity we offer at our hotels—bringing together local and international cuisine for a perfect pairing. At Nayara Resorts, we believe no other hotel combines cuisine and experience at our level. It's not just about the food; it's about the entire experience, the fine dining, and the 'why' behind what we do. We aim to provide a personalized experience that defies expectations, whether you're in these regions or even these countries."
“No other hotel brings this combination of cuisine and experience together at the level we do at Nayara Resorts.”
A Sampling of Cuisine Options Across the Nayara Resorts:
As Chef Weiss described, there is a vast array of both internationally-inspired and locally-focused dining options and on-site restaurants across the Nayara Resorts portfolio to tantalize all types of food lovers. Here are just a few culinary highlights to whet your appetite:
Amor Loco - Nayara Springs, Costa Rica:
A journey across Costa Rica in one meal, with a seven-course exploration of the seven regions of the country. For this adult-only resort, Chef Weiss has developed a unique experience that marries quintessentially Tico products (including some unique even to locals) with international techniques and presentation. As noted on the hotel’s website, here you can “discover some of the most emblematic local products through an innovative, precise, and sensitive signature cuisine, with French and Japanese techniques adapted to the local gastronomy."
Ayla - Nayara Tented Camp, Costa Rica
Imagine dining at a signature Mediterranean restaurant with Middle East flair in the canopy of the Costa Rican rainforest. In this elegant, fine dining experience, guests can partake in uniquely paired culinary offerings while overlooking the majestic Arenal Volcano National Park. Think of it as our take on a treehouse restaurant. The resort also has private dining and a la carte dining experiences available.
Elephant House - Nayara Bocas del Toro, Panama
At this luxury all-inclusive resort, guests have a wide variety of incredible restaurants. Still, one to definitely add to the top of the list is the Elephant House, housed in a 100+-year-old Balinese building shipped over specifically for this magical dining experience. In what the team describes as “bocaterian” cuisine, diners can feast on locally sourced fresh seafood while watching some of the ocean’s most dramatic creatures swim by.
Quincho & Ckelar - Nayara Alto Atacama, Chile
Surrounded by dramatic rock outcroppings and vast vistas, Atacama offers numerous uniquely Chilean dining options from renowned chefs of the region. At Quincho, pictured above, we offer a typical Atacamenian BBQ twice a week that features locally sourced grilled meats and vegetables.
At Ckelar, our fine dining establishment, the cuisine is centered on an Andean experience:
Our gastronomy is deeply connected to the surroundings as most of our vegetables come from our Andean Garden. See these vegetables in action in our asparagus salad with orange wedges, green apple infused with ayrampo, goat cheese marinated in muña muña, and carob vinaigrette.
And, of course, no Chilean dining experience would be complete without a pairing of incredible locally sourced fine wines.
At Nayara Resorts’ six properties, culinary excellence knows no bounds, and every meal promises a remarkable blend of global inspiration and local creativity.

When travelers embark on a journey to exotic destinations, they often seek more than just picturesque landscapes and luxurious accommodations. They crave a deeper connection with the environment, and a chance to witness the incredible diversity of flora and fauna that travel to unique locations offers. Nayara Resorts in Costa Rica, Panama, and Chile are indeed incredible properties that immerse visitors in stunning natural settings and luxury, but what may not often be focused upon is our wildlife.
While it would be an extensive article to explore every animal, bird, fish, and insect you may come in contact with, we wanted to give you a primer on just a few of the unique species that we are proud to have as our neighbors at Nayara’s six resorts.
Costa Rica: Arenal Volcano National Parks - Nature Lovers paradise!
With 6% of the world’s biodiversity found in a small nation, Costa Rica is a nature-lovers paradise.
Located in the heart of the rainforest, Nayara in Costa Rica has an intimate relationship with nature. But this is not just a story of coexistence – we have taken proactive steps to contribute positively to our natural surroundings with a massive reforestation effort.
Nayara Tented Camp, our newest hotel in Costa Rica, used to sit on a barren cattle ranch devoid of vegetation let alone fauna. We took it upon ourselves to bring the rainforest back to this desolate landscape, and so we planted hundreds of indigenous trees and plants creating a habitat for wildlife in the process. This included over 100 Cecropia trees, a sloth favorite, that turned our resort into a veritable sloth sanctuary.
We now have on-staff naturalists trained and profoundly passionate about these enigmatic creatures. Each member is devoted to monitoring and studying the local wildlife, ensuring their well-being while enhancing our guests’ experiences through info sessions and guided tours.
At all three of Nayara’s resorts nestled in the shadows of Arenal Volcano, you are bound to experience an array of incredible wildlife, including:
Sloths

Costa Rica's lush rainforests are famous for their slow-paced inhabitants, sloths. These enigmatic creatures are known for their leisurely lifestyle, spending most of their lives hanging upside down from tree branches. Sloths come in two main species in Costa Rica: the two-toed sloth and the three-toed sloth. While spotting a sloth may require some patience, their distinctive appearance and unhurried movements make for an unforgettable sight.
Toucans
Photo by Zdeněk Macháček on Unsplash
If you're a bird enthusiast, Costa Rica is a paradise. Among the most iconic avian residents is the toucan. Known for their striking, oversized beaks, these birds are both visually stunning and audibly distinctive. They are often found perched in treetops, making for excellent photo opportunities. Toucans are known for their vibrant plumage and unique calls, adding a delightful soundtrack to your stay.
Coati

Coatis, also known as pizotes, are endearing relatives of raccoons. These small mammals are highly sociable, travel in large multigenerational troops, and can often be seen foraging for food in the forests surrounding Nayara Resorts. With their distinctive long tails and inquisitive behavior, coatis are a delightful sight for animal lovers. Remember to maintain a respectful distance and not feed them, as it's essential to preserve their natural behavior.
Howler Monkeys

The booming echo of howler monkeys is an unmistakable sound in the Costa Rican rainforest, often sounding out around midmorning or towards dusk. These primates, known for their prehensile tails and distinctive black faces, often form troops that move through the treetops. Observing these magnificent creatures leaping between branches and communicating with their calls is a thrilling experience that connects you to the wild heart of the jungle, and you can often spot them right outside of your bedroom window.
Panama: Bocas del Toro - Aquatic Nature Travel At Its Best!
Bocas del Toro, an archipelago on Panama’s Caribbean coast, is a tropical paradise beckoning travelers with its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Widely known as the Galapagos of the Caribbean, it owes its reputation to the biodiversity that graces its shores.
Nayara’s Private Island in Bocas del Toro is a picturesque setting unique in the region; a Balinese-inspired escape that invites you to open yourself up to the beauty of nature, the sea, and the archipelago that makes up this special region. Here you are bound to see scores of fish species, as well as mammals that will leave lasting memories, including:
Dolphins
To truly uncover the magic of Bocas del Toro, you need a private boat and captain, an integral part of the Nayara Bocas del Toro experience. Our captains aren’t just skilled mariners; they’re trained naturalists eager to share their insights. In the tranquil waters of Dolphin Bay, you’ll be greeted by schools of dolphins, often numbering in the dozens. As you sip on chilled Champagne and savor the breathtaking sunset over the bay, this experience transforms from a mere tour into a romantic adventure adding a touch of enchantment to your Bocas del Toro visit.
Leatherback Sea Turtle
Photo by Wexor Tmg on Unsplash
Bocas del Toro is blessed with pristine beaches that serve as nesting grounds for the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle. These massive reptiles can reach up to seven feet in length and are known for their distinctive leather-like shell. Witnessing a leatherback sea turtle soaring through the water to lay her eggs or witnessing the tiny hatchlings making their way to the ocean is a humbling and unforgettable experience.
Nurse Shark
Photo by Ryan Geller on Unsplash
Beneath the crystal-clear waters of Bocas del Toro, you'll find a thriving marine ecosystem. Nurse sharks are a common sight in these Caribbean waters. Despite their somewhat intimidating appearance, these sharks are shy and docile, and much more afraid of humans than we are of them!
Snorkeling, diving, or even sea kayaking with nurse sharks provides a unique opportunity to observe these graceful creatures up close, as they’re often found napping on the ocean floor during the day.
Panamanian Night Monkey
As the sun sets over the lush landscapes of Bocas del Toro, a new cast of characters emerges. Among them is the Panamanian night monkey, a nocturnal primate with large, expressive eyes adapted for low-light conditions. Their secretive nature makes spotting them during the daytime tricky, so guided night tours offer the best chance for a unique adventure to discover these elusive creatures in their natural habitat.
Chile: A Tale of Two Locations - Unique Natural Habitat Adventures
Chile offers some of the continent’s most diverse landscapes, from the arid Atacama Desert in the north to the stunning fjords of Patagonia in the south, to the distinctively Polynesian volcanic Easter Island far into the Pacific Ocean. In these contrasting regions, you'll encounter a range of unique animals that surprise and intensify your stay at our two Nayara Resorts, including:
Wild Horses
Easter Island, or Rapa Nui as it’s known locally, boasts a robust population of wild horses, their presence intertwined with a unique tapestry of history, adaptation, and isolation. In the late 19th century, the arrival of horses on Easter Island was a turning point. It followed the tragic Peruvian slave raid of 1862, which decimated the island’s human population, leaving survivors and, later, European settlers who brought horses for transportation and labor.
As the island’s human population dwindled, horses were left to adapt and thrive in the island’s mild climate and ample vegetation. With no natural predators and an absence of large native mammals that could regulate the horse population, they multiplied unchecked, contributing to their remarkable numbers.
Today, this unexpected population of wild horses is thought to be larger than the island’s human inhabitants. They become an integral part of Easter Island’s landscape, adding a unique charm to the island’s allure. Visitors can witness the horses’ untamed beauty against the backdrop of the island’s iconic Moai statues, offering a profound connection with nature and a testament to the island’s resilience and history.
Llamas
The history of llamas in the Atacama Desert is closely tied to the indigenous people of the region, particularly the Andean cultures that have thrived there for centuries. These pack animals were instrumental in moving goods across the rugged terrain, enabling trade and communication between different settlements. Llamas held cultural significance for these communities and were often featured in indigenous art, textiles, and ceremonies. Llama wool was a valuable resource, used for crafting textiles and clothing.=
While their role diminished with the arrival of Spanish conquistadors and new transportation methods, llamas are making a comeback. Today, they contribute to eco-friendly tourism, allowing travelers to explore the Atacama Desert in the footsteps of ancient cultures that knew the true worth of these remarkable creatures. One such opportunity exists at Nayara Alto Atacama, where we boast our own llama corral. Here, guests can interact with llamas in an effort to help their conservation while connecting with these enduring symbols of the Atacama’s history and culture.
Guanaco
Photo by Chris Stenger on Unsplash
Closely related to the domesticated llama, the Atacama Desert’s Guanaco is one of the largest land mammals in South America, and like the llama, they travel in familial groups and herds ranging from 20 to up to 100 individuals. The Guanaco's inquisitive nature and peaceful manner make them a common sight during your exploration of Chile's highlands, though we recommend giving them their space — when annoyed, they can spit almost 2 meters with incredible accuracy!
Flamingos
The Chilean and Andean flamingos, with their striking pink plumage and elegant posture, are sights to behold and are a striking contrast to the Atacama Desert’s otherworldly landscape. This incredible bird, a World Wildlife Fund mascot, is found most often out in the salt flats eating brine shrimp (which give them their bright pink hue). The flamingoes are most abundant during the Chilean summer (December to February) but can be seen in the region year-round.
Ura Lobster
While the land of Easter Island has few mammals, the waters surrounding Easter Island are teaming with life. And with incredibly clear waters, it is a snorkeler’s paradise. One crustacean that you’ll often encounter peeking out between rock crevices is the ura lobster, a proud, colorful, spined lobster that can be found in the waters around the island and nowhere else on Earth.
The Ura, which draws its name from the Rapa Nui language, was a staple of the Rapa Nui diet for thousands of years, though in recent decades islanders have shifted to protecting this endemic species as one of the many marvels of Easter Island!
A Gateway Into Another World
Nayara Resorts in Costa Rica, Panama, and Chile offer more than just luxurious accommodations and stunning landscapes; they provide a unique opportunity to connect with the diverse and captivating wildlife of these regions. Whether you're enthralled by the languid movements of sloths, the vibrant plumage of toucans, the elusive nature of night monkeys, the majestic presence of leatherback sea turtles, the grace of nurse sharks, or the elegance of flamingos, there's an animal encounter awaiting you at these enchanting destinations. So, pack your binoculars, bring your camera, and get ready to embark on a wildlife adventure like no other.
Exploring Each of the Destinations of Nayara Resorts
Now that we’ve touched on the many elements of a Nayara Vacation, in the next section, we’ll explore each of the destinations in the Nayara Resorts family, and give you a deeper look at the six unforgettable properties to make your home when you travel with Nayara.
Arenal, Costa Rica: A Timeless Natural Wonder
For nearly three decades, visitors have flocked to Volcan Arenal to witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of an active volcano, glowing, rumbling, and smoking like a scene from an adventure film. This experience leaves an indelible mark on everyone, and, to some, ignites a lifelong desire to make Costa Rica their home. The volcano's mystical glow provided an otherworldly ambiance even when shrouded in fog. It's no surprise that Arenal remained a top tourist attraction for decades.
Though Arenal may no longer spew molten lava, its allure remains as potent as ever. Today, locals and tourists alike converge on Arenal to explore the national park, bask in the beauty of Lake Arenal, and immerse themselves in the region's lush jungles, breathtaking vistas, dynamic activities, and pristine waters.
Nayara Resorts, with three exquisite properties in the area, has found its heart in Arenal. Nestled in the hills of the Arenas region, Nayara Resorts seamlessly combines a deep reverence for the natural world, a rich tapestry of local traditions, and meticulous luxury to craft a one-of-a-kind, life-affirming experience for our guests. Arenal has become the backdrop for creating unforgettable family memories and is rightfully considered one of the best tropical vacation destinations on Earth.
Arenal Volcano - A Little Bit About The Region
Costa Rica's Arenal Volcano is the youngest in the country, standing at less than 7,500 years old, characterized by its iconic conical shape. The volcano's height varies with activity, but it currently stands at around 1,633 meters (5,358 ft) above sea level, with a crater diameter of 140 meters (460 ft).
The 29,692-acre Arenal Volcano National Park, part of the larger 504,094-acre Arenal Conservation Area, established in 1991, includes the dormant Cerro Chato Volcano, which rises 1,140 meters (3,740 ft) above sea level.
Arenal plays a crucial role in Costa Rica's power production, with Lake Arenal, at the base of the volcano, providing 12 percent of the country's hydroelectric energy. On the opposite side of the lake, wind farms harness strong winds from the Tilarán mountain range, while the Miravalles Volcano Geothermic Plant taps into the volcanic activity for electrical power.
Arenal's climate is diverse, influenced by both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, resulting in temperatures ranging between 21°C and 27.5°C and annual rainfall averaging between 3,500 mm to 5,000 mm. Defined as a tropical rainforest climate, the rainy season lasts from May to January, while the dry season runs from February to April.
Activities to Suit All Desires
Arenal offers a plethora of adventure options, from zip-lining through the jungle canopy, walking on hanging bridges through the dense jungle, and exploring diverse bird and animal species, including toucans, hummingbirds, jaguars, deer, sloths, coatis, along with Costa Rica’s iconic howler monkeys. The region is also home to a wide array of reptiles, such as geckos, iguanas, and snakes like the parrot snake.
If you prefer scenic vistas, explore the terrain on horseback, mountain bike, or ATV. Water enthusiasts can partake in kayaking or paddleboarding on Lake Arenal, while adrenaline junkies can brave white-water rafting on the Balsa and Sarapiqui Rivers during the rainy season. For those seeking an extra dose of excitement, consider rappelling down waterfall-laden canyons or venturing into local caves. Arenal offers endless opportunities to create cherished memories.
Many visitors are drawn to the region for a more serene form of adventure, such as birdwatching, night animal or frog tours, yoga, and bodywork. The area exudes a unique energy, drawn from the volcano and its climate, making it perfect for those seeking renewal. Cultural enthusiasts can explore coffee cultivation, learn to cook with cacao, discover the arts and crafts of the Maleko community, or visit the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge.
And perhaps the most well-known are the hot springs. For decades, relaxation in the region has included soaking in the local hot springs. With dozens of resort-based options, this has become a rite of passage in Arenal. Nayara Resorts has gained a reputation for its award-winning spas, offering the ideal way to cap off a day of adventure or relaxation. Our spas have received accolades like "best hotel spa" from Conde Nast Traveler and the title of the #1 luxury hotel in the world from TripAdvisor.

Nayara Springs: A Secluded Place of Understated Luxury
There is a reason why Tripadvisor has named Nayara Springs the #1 Luxury Hotel in the World. Nayara Springs holds a special place in the hearts of the Nayara Resorts team as a place where beauty, luxury, and a special connection to the world combine in a unique property filled with special moments to come.
This adults-only property feels like part of the jungle and the topography of Arenal. Every path, every deck, and every location becomes a natural tableau that recenters and relaxes you. When you are on the grounds you feel your heartbeat and stress lessen, and your senses draw you into the vast jungle. You smell the floral notes in the breeze, hear the beautiful songs of the wildlife, taste the locally-grown fruit by the pool, and see the clouds crossing the peak of Arenal Volcano. It is a setting that fosters a special connection between people and the property.
We expand upon this bond by creating villas that are both sumptuous and serene. With naturally-fed mineral springs, plunge pools, and spacious bedroom and lounging amenities, our villas are perfect for couples celebrating a special occasion or looking for pampering without pretense. You can easily spend an entire day just relaxing in your villa and your pool, but as we’ve noted, Arenal is an area that draws guests to participate in activities, and our staff will happily develop itineraries (both on- and off-property).
When you are ready to dine, Nayara Springs's award-winning restaurants have you covered. Executive Chef William Weiss and his team have developed signature dining experiences that are truly memorable. At the signature restaurant Amor Loco, guests are invited on a culinary journey across Costa Rica’s provinces for a unique seven-course experience. Other options include dining by the pool in the afternoon or a stunning Northern Italian meal at Mis Amores.
And of course, no trip to a Nayara Resort is complete without spending time in our award-winning spa, which has won “Best in the World” and “Reader’s Choice” awards from Condé Nast Traveler three years in a row.
Nayara Tented Camp: A Clifftop Tent with the Vibrant Rainforest Below

Nayara Alto Atacama | Exploring An Alien Landscape From the Lap of Luxury
The Atacama Desert is one of the most remote and strange places on Earth, with conditions so unique they are studied to provide insight into the possibility of life on other planets.
And in the heart of this desert, far from clouds, human settlement, and light pollution, lies the oasis of Nayara Alto Atacama, a luxurious retreat meant to capture the strange contradictions of distance and connection, of otherworldly beauty and internal peace, of ancient legends and modern luxury.
The natural landscape is stark and striking, yet hides a vibrant and resilient ecosystem that has thrived without rain for hundreds of years and remained unchanged for almost 15 million. The surroundings may be rugged and dry, but in our oasis, you’’ll find a culinary experience, amenities, spa, and wellness offerings to rival any on earth. Above and around you, the sky and land seem alien, like they could not possibly exist on the ocean and forest planet we know so well, and yet upon leaving you’ll feel more connected to our planet and the greater world around you.
We invite you to step into this journey of mirages, secrets, and cosmic beauty with us, and explore Nayara Alto Atacama.
An Oasis In the Heart of the Northern Chile’s Atacama
Every journey starts with a warm welcome for guests, who can enter what will be their desert sanctuary for the following days: the rooms of our “Ayllu” (village). There are a total of 42 rooms divided into three categories — Quitor, Catarpe, and Tilo — and each one offers its own unique interpretation of Andean mountain living. Surrounded by native Andean vegetation and fruit trees, and accented with elegant decoration, design, and amenities that blend with the natural landscapes, the first glance at Nayara Alto Atacama is easily etched in your memory.
A Closer Look at Nayara Alto Atacama
Outside the rooms await natural, culinary, and wellness experiences that, together, lead to a heightened state of excitement and renewal throughout your stay. Before you set out for adventure on guided tours by experts, it’s worth taking some time to simply immerse yourself in your surroundings. The hotel’s corral of llamas pays homage to a typical Ayllu tradition of animal husbandry, the astronomical observation platform offers a spot to marvel at the tapestry of stars offered by the Atacama sky, and all throughout the resort you can find cool oases like pools and shady alcoves integrated into the ruggedly beautiful terrain.
Once you’ve gotten your bearings, the adventures of the Atacama desert await. You can immerse yourself in local culture and history on journeys through Rainbow Valley, or guided tours to the architectural sites of ancient Atacamenian villages. You can embark on contemplative journeys to true wonders of the desert, like the Atacama Salt Flats, the Tatio Geysers, the cacti forests, and the lagoons of the High Plateau, to name just a few. And for those seeking to conquer the rugged terrain, there are more rigorous excursions like the Jauna Trek and Cactus hike, as well as the combination hiking-biking treks through Vilama and Devil’s Throat.
Whatever your adventure, at the end of these captivating excursions, the path to relaxation and absolute wellness awaits at the Puri Spa, which uses ancient elements as the basis for its treatments: fire, water, earth, and air. Designed with ancient tenets of well-being in mind, the spa uses sounds, aromas, and artisanal organic products from the area to generate an atmosphere of relaxation and self-connection, guiding you toward the complete renewal that only the desert can offer.
Our Perspective on Cuisine
Having delighted the sense of sight, and improved your health, it is the turn of taste. The Nayara Alto Atacama culinary offering is made up of the flavors typical of northern Chile, created from three main ingredients: corn, flour, and meat. But simple building blocks can make way for an eye-opening experience. Just as the architecture of the hotel dialogues with the environment, our kitchen does the same. Much of the vegetables and herbs that are used in our dishes come from our Andean Garden, and on the menu are meals that draw from local traditional ingredients — Peruvian corn, potato, pork, meat, and onion, among others. These are flavors you may have enjoyed before, but when they are locally grown and prepared by chefs who build upon and evolve the traditional preparations, the result is a dining experience that can’t be missed.
The Perfect Pairing
As the cherry on top of the experience, or rather the grape, visitors will discover everything about one of the most emblematic traditions and industries of Chile: winemaking. Through pairings created by expert sommeliers from Bar Ckelar, the wide variety of flavors and sensations of Andean cuisine are revealed and accented by the best wines from the region (and to some, the entire world). Our tastings are the perfect invitation to enter our enviable cellar, and you can enjoy local varietals and vintages throughout your stay.
An oasis under the stars of one of the driest deserts in the world awaits you in Nayara Alto Atacama, and the true beauty of your adventure is just getting started.
A Journey Through Chile’s Atacama Desert | Beyond San Pedro de Atacama
In Chile, the Atacama Desert is the place believed to be the driest nonpolar desert in the world. Nestled on the Pacific coast of Chile, between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountains, this arid region rises to 4,678 m above sea level, and in the heart of this rugged landscape, you can also find incredible beauty, with skies of the purest azure and unreal panoramas of stars unclouded by moisture or light.
Here, turquoise lagoons against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks rub shoulders with vast expanses covered with paja brava, an endemic herbaceous plant, and the life adapted to live here are some of the strangest and most fascinating on earth.
To reach the true heart of the world's driest desert, you depart from the village of San Pedro de Atacama into the sparsely populated Desierto de Atacama. From there, you can head to the Altiplano and reach the largest salar (saline deposit) in Chile, which unfolds at the foot of the majestic volcanoes Licancabur (5,916 m) and Lascar (5,592 m).
Other stops on your journey include the Chaxa Lagoon, where pink flamingos have taken up residence. The scene captivates at sunrise when the sky catches fire and their image is reflected in the mirrors of water lined with saline concretions of brilliant white.
Deeper Into the Deserts of Northern Chile
Via a road that seems to stretch up to the sky and the horizon all at once, we reach the 4,000 m altitude and venture deeper into the remote desert, where the air grows thin enough that it takes time to adjust. To alleviate the symptoms of this mountain lightheadedness, we use an ancestral remedy, offering an infusion of coca leaves used since ancient times to help with the elevation adjustment. And just in time to appreciate Piedras Rojas, and its emerald lake set with red rocks, a color related to the oxidation of iron.
The road trip continues, a few hundred meters higher, to the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, which reveal another striking picture. Overlooked by the two eponymous volcanoes with sparkling eternal snows, and circular lagoons with deep blue contrast in the middle of the pajonales, these grass meadows are the gathering place of a host of protected fauna (vicuñas, guanacos, Darwin ñandus) that stop by between their grand journeys through the near-martian Landscape.
Through the Moon Valley and the Valley of Death
But as we return from the heart of Atacama, we continue our circuit through the desert, passing the majestic Valley of the Moon, and a little further, Death Valley. With its canyons, pointed ridges, ravines, and its “big dune” beaten by the wind, the desert plunges into an unreal panorama. It is even more noticeable at sunset, when its ochre tones ignite as far as the eye can see and the moon invites itself into the scenery.
In the desert, the enchantment does not die out at nightfall. And in fact, most animal life becomes active as the sun goes down, against a starlit backdrop like no other. Drought, altitude, and absence of light pollution make the sky of Atacama one of the purest in the world, and while you can observe the stars with the help of telescopes, even with the naked eye, the spectacle is already breathtaking.
After your journey through the rugged landscape, stopping to appreciate the stars above is best done while sipping pisco in one of the deckchairs of Nayara Alto Atacama, the only hotel in the region to have a 360-degree observatory in the middle of nature.
You can watch for hours without getting tired, and if your night drags on into the morning, or you wake before dawn, you’ll catch the final spectacle of your journey — the geysers of the Tatio. The vision of these craters spewing columns of white steam up to several meters high reminds you why exactly this land is studied as the precursor to planetary travel. When you’re here in Atacama, it’s impossible to avoid the impression of having indeed landed on another planet.
A Gift from Another World | Atacama Stargazing
Hand in hand with visiting the alien landscape of the Atacama desert is the opportunity to view the galaxies above us like nowhere else on Earth, thanks to a unique climate and conditions.
But what truly sets us apart from other destinations is our unrivaled stargazing experience, complete with our private observatory and an in-house astronomer to guide your cosmic exploration.
Unlike all other resorts in San Pedro de Atacama, our sanctuary stands in the untamed heart of the desert, not in the town. Here, the stark absence of light pollution accentuates the brightness of the stars against the dark sky, and the soaring altitude of 2400 meters above sea level forges the most exquisite conditions for celestial observation.
And Atacama’s moniker — the driest desert in the world — hides another benefit, with over 200 cloudless nights a year, ensuring a partial or entirely clear sky every evening. But what truly captivates the hearts of stargazers at this gorgeous destination is the unobstructed panorama of the spectacular southern sky, a celestial wonder often hidden from viewers in the Northern Hemisphere.

Otherworldly In More Ways Than One
Yet, the allure of this region extends beyond its nocturnal splendor. The Atacama Desert, with its uncanny resemblance to Mars, plays an instrumental role in NASA’s preparation for interplanetary missions. In addition to its excellent conditions for astronomical observatories, the austere, rocky landscapes, and comparable soil chemistry render the Atacama desert a terrestrial doppelgänger for the Red Planet.
The Atacama Desert is a testament to the Earth’s endurance, having withstood extreme aridity for an estimated 10 to 15 million years and potentially even longer. Life here is a testament to resilience, with microbial life thriving beneath the surface or within rocks, shielded from the relentless ultraviolet radiation of months of clear sunshine.
If life does exist or has ever thrived on Mars, the planet’s harsh surface conditions would likely compel it to seek refuge underground — just like in the Atacama. Therefore, our desert haven serves not just as a window to the cosmos, and a refuge for threatened species, but also as a stepping stone toward uncharted planetary frontiers
That feeling of connection to something far greater runs through every aspect of life in Atacama. The local indigenous population’s ancestral worldview imbues the starry sky with spiritual significance, and they maintain that the earth reflects the sky and vice versa, underscoring our origins from stardust. This notion traces its roots back to the legend of an ancestral star, older than our sun, that gave rise to the chemical elements forming our solar system and ourselves.
And when you step into the luxurious retreat in the heart of this alien world, these twin sensations — the remote feeling of being thousands of miles from the stresses of daily life, and yet connected to something greater — combine to truly create a sense of magic and rejuvenation.
We Invite You to Join Us
In sum, the Nayara Alto Atacama isn’t just a retreat — it’s a gateway to the cosmos, a testament to life’s resilience in extreme conditions, and a place to be far away from the nearest problems, and close to the grand truth of the stars that surround us. Finding Peace Surrounded by the Ocean
Key to the beauty of Nayara Bocas del Toro is the fact that the resort is on a secluded island, surrounded on all sides by the revitalizing essence of the ocean enveloping you. Far from the disturbances of noise, air, and light pollution, this isolated paradise invites you to embrace a more primal lifestyle, seamlessly harmonizing with nature and the elements while ensuring top-tier comfort.
Ingredients for every meal are drawn from the islands, the sea, and the abundant surroundings, and each private villa provides a tranquil escape to connect with the natural world at your own pace. Bocas Town, A Private Paradise in Reach of Panama City
Bocas Del Toro, Panama, is a hidden gem slowly being unveiled to the world. With some of the best beaches in the world, turquoise waters that shimmer like jewels, and a charming small-town vibe, Bocas Del Toro has captivated both the local population of Panama and the hearts of travelers from around Latin America and the world. In fact, Conde Nast Traveler’s May 2023 issue recognized Bocas Del Toro as one of “The 50 Most Beautiful Small Towns in the World.”
Getting to Nayara Bocas Del Toro
Nayara Bocas del Toro is located on Frangipani Island, a smaller island in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, just a short (20-minute) boat ride from the town of Bocas del Toro. There are nine islands in the Bocas del Toro island chain (counting the inhabitable larger islands), and on your private boat ride you'll get to take in all of the rich life that inhabits these protected areas, guided by your personal boat captain.
From there, Nayara Bocas del Toro awaits, and once you set foot on the island, everything you need is within walking distance or swimming/kayaking distance, including one of the marvels of property -- the manmade Kupu Kupu Beach.
The Creation of the World's First Aerial Beach
In order to capture the magic of Kupu Kupu Beach, we wanted to share this story from one of the project's visionaries Dan Behm.
"Imagine walking down a ten-foot-wide wooden boardwalk lined with palm trees and tropical flowers. Soon a beach and tiki bar come into view. As you get closer you take in the beautiful white sand beach with palm trees swaying in the breeze. There are plenty of lounge chairs with small cocktail tables and the deep blue waters of the Caribbean beyond. You step directly from the boardwalk onto the beach and feel the sand between your toes.
You start to explore, and you’re caught by surprise as you realize that this is no ordinary beach. Straight ahead are tiled steps with railings leading from the beach into the ocean. The steps are wide at the top and gradually narrow as you approach the water. Under the water isn’t more sand, but rather a platform. The entry to the water is like entering a swimming pool, only the ocean is your pool. It seemed so “real” only moments ago, but this is something different, something special!
The island did not have a beach. That is one of the first things I noticed. Nayara Bocas del Toro is an idyllic Caribbean resort with tantalizing breezes, stunning architecture, and tasteful art. But no beach. The water surrounding the island is warm, crystal clear, and inviting. But no beach.
A man-made beach built on the shoreline was not an option. It would disrupt the mangrove and ocean floor. In Europe, they are experimenting with floating beaches. A floating beach did seem like a real possibility until you consider the price, which was prohibitive and required so much maintenance as to be a non-starter. The only option, it seemed, was to build a beach on stilts over the water. Surely someone had done it before, we thought. But as we researched, we found that no, this was something new. And thus began our journey."
The Challenges and Triumph of Creating an Aerial Beach
The possibility of being the world’s first aerial beach added a sense of intrigue to the project, and we reached out to our audience to see if this was a project worth undertaking. Our audience agreed that a beach would truly elevate the Nayara Bocas del Toro experience, but there was skepticism as to how realistic the idea was. It was a world first after all.
Regardless, our audience responded with their desires, and some practical challenges. For example, the beach had to:
-
Look and feel like a real beach
-
Have beautiful white Caribbean sand
-
Have an easy and natural way to get into the water
-
Have large palm trees, but not in pots
-
Have a bathroom and shower nearby
-
Have adequate drainage so that the water can dry after a rain
-
Have easy access without steps
-
Have an attractive bar and grill on the beach
-
Have the correct elevation to accommodate the daily and seasonal tide changes
-
Have enough room and stability for twenty to thirty people
-
Have space to be enlarged in the future
-
Have adequate breezes for our sunbathers
-
Be in an area with deep water so there would be no obstructions for swimming
It was no easy task, but for our team of designers and engineers, designing with these myriad constraints in mind was a welcome challenge.
We picked a spectacular spot on the island bay, in the same area where our luxury over-water villas are situated. Then we had our architects and engineers get to work on designing our “sandbox” beach on stilts. It took over a year, but the designs were completed, and the result is something unlike anything else on Earth.
Welcoming Guests to Kupu Kupu Beach!
We have named our aerial beach Kupu Kupu Beach, and the area is approximately ninety feet long by twenty feet wide. The Tipsy Bar, with a stylish curving wood shake roof, provides seating for eight. Our chairs on the beach accommodate twenty. In addition, there's a ten-foot-wide wooden boardwalk along the entire length of the beach which allows for a “food truck” to stop by, and finally, four tables with umbrellas and sixteen chairs on one end of the beach.
The engineering challenges continued as we added life and adaptation to the local environment. There are four large palm trees on the beach, lit for evening ambiance which appear to be growing out of the sand like on a real beach. But instead, they're planted in large tanks below the surface of the beach to contain the roots, and carefully monitored and nurtured to remain healthy.
Other additions make this a delightful marvel too. For example, the cement surface below the beach is slightly sloped and includes ninety separate drains to keep the sand dry. The drains are covered with a geotextile that lets the rainwater through but not the sand, meaning Cuca Beach has not disrupted the surrounding environment.
A Bridge Between Aerial Beach and the Aquatic World
Providing swimmers access to the water in a way that feels natural was our largest challenge. We did not want our guests to struggle with climbing in and out of the water on ladders. So, we decided on stairs leading to a platform submerged in the water. The intent is to make it feel like you are walking into a swimming pool.
In addition, we added a platform midway between the beach surface and the water, accessible by the stairs, so our guests have a place to sit and hang their feet in the water. The beach itself needed to be high enough above the surface of the water to accommodate the tides without flooding. This platform also provides a convenient surface to place snorkel masks and fins when getting in and out of the water.
Experiencing Nayara Bocas del Toro from any perspective is a beautiful experience, one that brings you closer to nature, yourself, and true relaxation and presence. But even better is the ability to kick back oceanside with a refreshing cocktail, nap in a pleasant breeze, and then take a dip in the eternally warm Caribbean to snorkel when you hear word of a visiting pod of dolphins or a school of tropical fish.
It's a vision of what life can be, and we look forward to sharing it with you.
When It Comes to Panama, Bocas Del Toro Can't Be Beat
We're firm believers that Bocas del Toro is one of the most special and worthwhile destinations to visit in the entire world. Otherwise, we wouldn't have chosen it as a home to share with you. And within the "Galapagos of the Caribbean," we've been honored to contribute our perspective on luxury hotels, one refined first in Costa Rica and then throughout Latin America.
Even with extensive photos and writings, it's hard to capture the beauty of this paradise in the Caribbean Islands. For that reason, we invite you to join us and see for yourself what this private island paradise has to offer.

Hangaroa | Luxury Travel in The Ancient Paradise of Easter Island
Even if you've never been to Easter Island, or never even heard the name, one thing that is embedded into the global consciousness are the iconic Moai statues. Impassive and timeless, these relics of the Rapa Nui people are the remnants of an ancient time, the lasting achievements of a culture that thrived on this remote Polynesian island.
Coming face to face with the Moai statues, their unreadable expressions immediately invoke curiosity and mystery. Where did they come from? Why and how were they created? What stories and events have they seen in their centuries-long existence?
Throughout a trip to Easter Island, known as Isla de Pascua to those in nearby mainland Chile, and as Rapa Nui by the indigenous people, this feeling of unearthing the past is constantly present. Wherever you go, you're surrounded by a rich history, one that emerges from the earth and archaeological sites like the Easter Island heads. But there's also a living history here, from the still-thriving Rapa Nui traditions to the unique natural history protected by Rapa Nui National Park.
Nayara Hangaroa was built to be an Easter Island accommodation that fully embraces this history, both living and timeless, and also offers a contribution and a perspective on the future of the island. How can we learn from one of the world's mysterious, ancient paradises, and capture that feeling of wonder, vigor, and life traveling in today’s modern world?
That was the question our design team faced, and in this article, we'll explore the vision behind Nayara Hangaroa, how our team has turned that vision into a reality, what you can expect on your own Easter Island vacation, and how to get started on your own adventure back in time.
Bringing The Beauty of an Ancient Paradise Into the Modern World
The story of Nayara Hangaroa is one of stunning natural beauty, mysterious statues, and connecting with a sacred and vibrant culture. Our mission from the start has been to offer authentic, warm, and extraordinary service and share the magic and the enigma of Rapa Nui.
This was a paradise, a land of noble kings and queens, and hallowed ground for the Rapa Nui people. We treat that with the utmost weight, taking pride in our natural and cultural richness, and in being environmentally and socially responsible in everything we do.
A Direct Line to the Past
But we're not approaching this journey alone. Alongside us is the Hito family, a family whose roots trace back to the creation of the Moai themselves. Many centuries of life on Rapa Nui island have made the Hito Family firm believers that their unique and intriguing heritage needs to be preserved for posterity.
“Rapa Nui culture is alive and evolving,” says Marisol Hito, “and we must ride the winds of change, always proud of our heritage. The Rapa Nui culture and soul are not only ours to revere, they belong to the whole world!”
In a time where the world is moving faster than ever before, where it can be easy to get swept up and lose track of the rich history and roots that created us, we're honored to work and live alongside the descendants of the Rapa Nui themselves as we help forge the future of the island.
The Guiding Principles of Nayara Hangaroa
When people visit Easter Island to stay with us, we follow guiding principles that draw influence from the ancient lifestyles of the Rapa Nui people, while also offering attentive and world-class service and luxury. It all starts with respect for this sacred island and its traditions; everything else follows.
Respect for the Land and the Earth
Nayara Hangaroa’s philosophy is based on the local concept of “Kainga,” respecting and honoring Mother Earth. We aim to protect and preserve our magical island, Rapa Nui. More importantly, we want our community to thrive for generations to come.
We believe in building in harmony with nature, leaving space for wildlife and wilderness, while planting the seeds that contribute to the growth of our local community.
Our aim is to create a positive impact on the island and the Rapa Nui community and go beyond sustainability to create the conditions that would make it feasible for the new generations to live and prosper on the island.
Preservation of Design and Architectural History
For Nayara Hangaroa, design goes hand in hand with our 'Kainga' philosophy. We have built a hotel that encourages the preservation of this archeological heritage and the growth of the local community. The result is sustainable and renewable lodging suited for the region. Land topography and our unique green roofs allow us to maximize the heating effects of sunlight and ventilation, cooling the buildings and minimizing the need for air conditioning.
Stewardship of Culture and Community
We think local and want our community to thrive. Hence, our initiatives involve the community in many of our activities, especially as guides and communicators of the history of the Rapa Nui. Our team comes from the neighboring town of Hanga Roa (also called Hangaroa) or from other areas of the island. Details of indigenous artisanry are everywhere in the hotel, from the ceilings to the volcanic stone tubs.
The hotel itself was designed as a tribute to the Orongo ceremonial village, one of the most iconic places on the island. Every detail was designed for an evolved version of this ancient, traditional experience, from the large green garden and cypress trees carefully chosen for this habitat, to the relaxing tubs made of clay and the volcanic sinks created from only one piece of stone. Every detail of our hotel is created so that you can feel the culture and nature with every step you take.
Cero Kilómetros | Our Gastronomic Philosophy
Our kitchen is driven by the mission to offer sustainable and healthy food that uses local and seasonally available products, while supporting local farmers and producers. The aim is to get to “zero kilometers” of distance between our produce and our kitchen, and in doing so, allow our culinary team to create a flavor and culinary experience that is utterly unique to the island.
What Is There To Do While Visiting Easter Island?
From the moment you arrive in Easter Island, you're welcomed by the sea breeze, the white coral sand, the swaying palm trees, the rolling green mountanside, and the striking backdrop of the volcanic crater. It evokes an immediate desire to uncover the fascinating history of this place and explore this island paradise, a feeling that continues until well after you reach your hotel room.
Below, we'll touch on just a few of the Easter Island tours and experiences you can dive into when visiting the hallowed island of Rapa Nui. You can explore them further in our tour book.
See the Iconic Moai Statues
The Moai, the island’s gigantic stone statues, are the most unique and idiosyncratic elements of Rapa Nui history. Today, the island is considered “A Wonder of the World,” and a UNESCO Heritage Site, and visiting Easter Island can hardly be complete without visiting one of the main sites of the Moai. Nobody knows how the statues were created but they attest to the courage, ingenuity, and determination of the human spirit. It is believed that every Moai represents an ancestor, a leader, a beloved forefather. Today, the faces of the statues are called “Aringa Ora,” living faces of loved and revered ancestors.
We offer 5 different tours to see various Moai statues around the island. At Mana Tapuna, you can explore the historical arrival point of Hotu Matu’a and other early Polynesian navigators on the northern coast of the island, and visit beaches of myth like Anakena Beach and Ovahe. On the Tarai Moai and the Vaiteka tours, we take a deeper look at the island, exploring the history of the Moai across mountainsides, oceanic cliffs, and the awe-inspiring caves of the island. At He Rongo o Te Manu, you can tour a majority of the island, to see the history of Rapa Nui at a larger scale, and at Ko Te Riku, you can explore the ceremonial and religious history of Rapa Nui archaeological sites and how they tie to modern life in the only town on this remote island.
Whether exploring these sites to uncover their history or simply taking a moment to take in their glory (like at the Tahai Sunset or Tongariki Sunrise tours), these moments are unforgettable and a vital part of visiting Easter Island.
Explore Rapa Nui National Park
If you want to experience Rapa Nui in a unique way, you can venture out with our team of guides on a trekking adventure to the most remote areas of the island. It's a perfect complement if you want to add physical activity to your agenda.
On foot, you can trek to the volcanoes and historical sites of Poike, one of the volcanoes that gave birth to the island, or hike Mount Terevaka, which boasts a 360-degree view of the entire island. You can explore the caves hidden in the landscape like Ana Kakenga, Ana Te Pahu, and others, venture to the Rano Kau viewpoint above the island's largest crater, or trace the trail along the most breathtaking trail coastal trail in the region. Capable trekkers can even embark on a 6-hour hike to lands only accessible by foot or on horseback, culminating at the picturesque Anakena beach.
And for those who feel the need for speed, there are other excursions:like4x4 quad bike rentals to explore the island at your own pace, mountain biking from the hotel to the south coast of the island and Hanga Roa harbor, and challenging the caverns beneath the island entirely on a mountain bike.
Take a Unique Culinary Adventure
The base of Hangaroa cuisine is local products, which include sustainably sourced seafood from the surrounding Pacific Ocean (including the endemic Ra Rape lobster), as well as the rich plants that thrive here like plantain, sweet potatoes, mangoes, and other fresh fruits.
With such bountiful, fresh ingredients, it's easy to follow our "Cero Kilómetros" philosophy, and the results from our culinary team are an absolute delight.
On hotel grounds, you can indulge in our Hangaroan concepts like Poerava, an indoor-outdoor terraced restaurant serving breakfast and lunch that combines traditional Rapa Nui and International cuisine. Ceviches, carpaccio, and stone-cooked tuna paired with Chilean wine from the most exceptional wineries in South America, are an absolute must.Savor an evening at our Kaloa Lounge, a sophisticated and relaxed gathering place for hotel guests s with endless sunset views, or enjoy the Vaikoa Bar, which honors the architecture of the ancient Rapa Nui, to create an intimate space to discover tropical cocktails.
Add in cooking classes in Hangaroan cuisine, or trips into town to explore local spots and restaurants, and you can be sure that whenever you visit Easter Island, food will be a vibrant and fascinating part of the adventure.
Lounge and Rejuvenate In Luxury at Nayara Hangaroa
Here at Nayara Hangaroa, we believe that Easter Island travel should be a time for rejuvenation and reconnection just as much as it is a time of adventure. In ages past, without the distractions of a digital age and the frantic nature of modern society, this paradise was a place of peace, wonder, and tranquility.
We have designed comprehensive wellness offerings and spa facilities that offer you the chance to truly unwind and engage with a timeless sense of internal peace.
Our spa is a replica of an ancient “Manavai” a circle created from stones that were used to protect crops from the wind and retain water. Surrounded by white sand and its beautiful corridors, the spa lives up to the word “Manavai”, a place where one will feel the power, energy, and purity of the earth.
So whether you choose to savor a massage, refresh with exfoliating treatments, body wraps, hot stones, sauna, and hydrotherapy, or take part in contemplative experiences like the sunrise over the Moai statues, you'll find a space to truly connect with the peace and power of a more ancient past.
Dive into the Protected Waters of the Pacific Ocean
Rapa Nui National Park is not just a protected landmass. The waters surrounding Easter Island are an aquatic habitat with several endemic species found nowhere else on Earth (like the Rapa Nui lobster). And in these waters, adventure beckons.
From the beaches, you can easily encounter tropical fish while exploring the reefs with a mask and snorkel, but to take this aquatic safari to the next level, you can go scuba diving beneath the waves of the Pacific.r. Sunken Moai, coral-encrusted caves, and underwater cliffs all await PADI-certified divers ready to brave the aquatic side of our national park.
And above the waves, the waters around Easter Island are a surfer's paradise, just waiting to be unlocked thanks to our expert instructors.
How To Get Here
Where Is Easter Island?
Easter Island, located at the eastern end of the Polynesian triangle, is the closest Polynesian island to mainland Chile. However, close is only a relative term, as Easter Island is a stunning 2200 miles from the mainland. As a result, you are surrounded by a pristine ocean on all sides, which also contributes to the fact that there are incredibly unique ecosystems found in the region.
Looking out to the horizon, it can be breathtaking to learn that the original Polynesian settlers traveled only using the stars, small boats, and a brilliant sense of direction through the heart of the Pacific Ocean. And despite all odds, they were able to reach Easter Island, as well as the dozens of islands throughout Polynesia.
How Do I Get to Easter Island?
Easter Island travel, in modern times, is a little simpler than it was in ancient times. Today, you can reach Easter Island via flights from Santiago, Chile, which land at the Hangaroa airstrip. Finding the right flight is usually the first step to planning Easter Island travel, and once you have your arrival and departure dates, we can happily provide insight into how best to plan the rest of your trip.
Is There a Best Time to Visit Easter Island?
In our humble opinion, there is no "best" time to visit Easter Island, merely different times of the year that are better for different reasons. January through March are the peak of the summer in the Southern Hemisphere, which can be classified as a "high season", but the beauty and temperate climate of Rapa Nui persists year-round.
If you'd like to learn more about when the best time to visit Easter Island is for you, feel free to reach out to our team here.
Join Us And Explore a Timeless Wonder of the World
Through words, photos, and videos, we endeavor to convey Rapa Nui's timeless beauty, natural allure, and captivating mystery. Yet, even the best footage can't fully encapsulate the essence of being here — feeling the earth beneath your feet, encountering the Moai, breathing in fresh air, and exploring clear waters. We invite you to connect with our team, explore further, and consider joining us in this preserved ancient destination, contributing its profound significance to our contemporary experiences.

Nayara Springs | Award-Winning Excellence in the Heart of Arenal
“Everything exceeded our expectations, and everyone on site went out of their way to make our stay memorable. The excursions we booked through them were wonderful, and the guides were knowledgeable. Dinner at Amor Loco was a highlight, but we enjoyed all the restaurants. Appreciated that each of the pool bars had different menus. Loved staying at the adult-only property, with the option to go to the other properties.
We were in one of the lower villas, which was very convenient to the pool, but the upper villas were more private. The wildlife onsite is outstanding — sloths, monkeys, frogs, and so many types of birds — bring binoculars! The rainforest massage is not to be missed— absolutely unforgettable. Will return in the future.”
— Sheryl B
“Nayara Springs is such a magical resort. The staff, food, resort amenities, and rooms were phenomenal. This is truly our favorite luxury accommodation. And the staff are genuinely so nice. We are recommending this resort to everyone we know. It costs a lot but the memories we made will last a lifetime. A sincere thank you to everyone who made our stay so wonderful.”
— Darby S
“We stayed at Nayara for our honeymoon last month and it was truly the most incredible experience! Everything about the resort is perfect - from the genuinely kind/helpful staff, spacious villas, experience options, food/drink quality, and overall just beautiful vibes this is the place to go for your honeymoon or any future trips!! Everyone is so willing and ready to help you in any way they can, and they make you feel so welcome right from the start. We will definitely be going back in the near future!”
— Rebekah K
“My husband and I loved our experience at Nayara Springs! All the other reviews are correct; the experience in person is better than just reading the reviews or seeing the pictures online. The employees, villa, food, excursions, etc. really make this location special!”
— Michelle B
Nayara Gardens | A Rainforest Adventure for the Whole Family
“I cannot say enough good things about the Nayara resort complex. This was the second time we had stayed at Nayara Gardens, and it was even more amazing than we remembered. There is a reason it is one of the best hotels in the world. You have access to all three facilities on the property unless you have kids with you. Kids are not allowed at the adult pool, the quiet pool, and one restaurant. We traveled without our kids, so we spent most of our time at the adult pool.
The staff is top-notch. They are so helpful and want to make sure you are totally satisfied. The turn-down service at night is my favorite touch. They leave you delicious treats. The food and drinks are so good, which is not always the case at a resort. They were very accommodating to my vegan diet, and they even had the most delicious vegan cake at the coffee shop. I have to give a special mention to Larry, Andrey, and Juan Carlos at the Cielito Linda (adult) pool. They were so attentive the second we arrived at the pool, and the drinks were out of this world.
The property itself is the most beautiful place you can imagine. When you are on your balcony, you feel like you are the only person in the entire resort. You will get lots of exercise walking the hills, but you can request a golf cart if you are unable to handle that kind of walk. Get all of your excursions out of the way before you arrive at Nayara because you will not want to leave once you are there. We can't wait to go back.”
— L Vernola
“I can’t say enough great things about this place. Every staff member was warm, welcoming, and super helpful. We had the great fortune of running across wildlife at the resort and got to see a family of monkeys, some curassow, several sloths, and a jaguarundi. We really enjoyed the breakfast buffet provided daily and our room was impeccably cleaned when we returned from the day’s excursions. This hotel collection really knows how to delight guests and we plan to visit their sister properties in Chile and Panama.”
— Cameron T
“We can’t say enough about this place!! Services far exceed expectations!! Every single staff member is amazing and goes above and beyond 100% of the time. Can guarantee an excellent vacation if staying at Nayara! A++++”
— Michael M
“Our room was a piece of paradise. The attention to detail was amazing. Our deck waiting, pool and tropical forest or something I won’t forget. The staff was friendly and pointed out animals in the trees. The food was wonderful. I want to go back as soon as possible.”
— Terry S
Nayara Tented Camp | Glamping Like You’ve Never Seen It Before
“A truly luxurious experience. Nothing else compares, truly. From personalized check-in to check-out, every need is taken care of. This was our 3rd time here, and we've already booked next year's trip. The tents are amazing, spacious, and filled with luxurious touches. Magnificent views. The restaurants on site are fantastic, a must-do for couples is Amor Loco. It definitely deserves a Michelin Star.
The romantic dinner is also amazing. But you can't go wrong anywhere (the Nayara Roll at Asia Luna is a must if you like sushi). As for adventure and fun, they have amazing daily activities for the whole family (my favorite was tortilla making and the farmers market trip). The personalized tours are another great option, and the waterfall hiking was amazing.
I really can't highlight how wonderful the entire staff is. From all the golf cart drivers to the amazing people who do the daily laundry service and cleaning staff to the restaurant staff and concierge staff and naturalists. Everyone goes above and beyond to make sure you have an incredible stay.
— Michelle S
“The nicest, cleanest most unique hotel I have ever experienced. The staff was so attentive, friendly & knowledgeable. The rooms are large & beautiful. The hot mineral spring pools are therapeutic & completely private. The room, patio & private pool is surrounded by the rainforest. You can birdwatch & view sloths (if you are really lucky!) from your room. We absolutely love it & will be returning.”
— Heidi M
“The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the resort. Special shout out to Melissa from the front desk and our excursion guides Christian and Chris. If you want to experience everything La Fortuna has to offer from seeing sloths (one sloth visited the trees around our tent multiple times - amazing being able to see one within a few feet away) to watching a huge variety of birds like the toucans, as well as enjoying the hot springs that come from the volcano in one place, then this is where you should go! The breakfasts were also amazing with so much variety and fresh fruits!”
— Nick K
“Amazing experience! The food, the property, and the team. All top-notch! This is the #1 property in South America. Well deserved 21,22,23!”
— Mitch
Nayara Bocas del Toro | A Private Island Paradise in Panama
“Best hotel ever! Its people, the views, the cuisine, the drinks. A special love to Ruby for her good vibes and attentive service, as well as to Javier who was also very cool and delighted us with her repertoire of cocktails. This is the best honeymoon place, it's like being in the jungle and at the same time completely at one with the sea.
The views in every direction, the sunrises, the snorkeling, leaving from the resort in kayaks and on stand-up paddleboards… and that’s not all. The beach with a bar, the boat outings, and even the work they do to stop mosquitoes is superb. You can see its good results and the Hotel is of very good taste, its facilities are very nice. THANK YOU VERY MUCH NAYARA.”
— Camila C
“We just returned from an amazing vacation with my husband. everything was spectacular! The food, the service, the rooms… unbeatable! A paradisiacal place where you can breathe tranquility and well-being. We hope to return very soon! we recommend it 100%.”
— Andrea S
“The best hotel in Panama I have ever been to. The attention is SO personalized that you feel like a king in paradise. Everyone is very friendly, the food is delicious (it's all-inclusive), and the landscapes are beyond words. It's the most beautiful place I've been to this year and I definitely hope to return!”
— Arantxa K
“The attention is excellent and personalized. They are interested in your well-being and enjoyment during your stay. Everything was perfectly clean and spotless, the cabins had a lot of privacy and the site was beautifully quiet. The food is delicious and varied. Restaurants and bars offer a variety of drinks and food. The menus are extensive. I loved every second in that place with my partner. I recommend 10/10!”

Nayara Hangaroa | Luxury and Adventure in an Ancestral Land
“We stayed at the Nayara Hangaroa in connection with a National Geographic tour. The hotel is the top choice for a visit to Easter Island. The hotel is built in a local architectural style, feels very authentic, and is integrated well into the environment. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. We loved the concrete floor, the distinctive shower stall, the fabulous stand-alone tub, and the beautiful view of the ocean from the outdoor seating area.
The bed was comfortable and the room was very quiet. The hotel is located an easy walking distance of town, where you can find restaurants and art galleries. The swimming pool is a nice size with ocean-view seating. The fitness center is small and minimally equipped; for runners, plenty of places to run from the hotel. The hotel provides a luxury stay in a very remote part of the world.”

“We spent six nights at the Nayara Hangaroa and the location could not have been better for our time on Rapa Nui. A fifteen-minute walk to town, beautifully quiet at night with a fabulous view, and a short cab ride to anywhere if we didn't want to walk. The staff was always so friendly and helpful, we felt very well taken care of, and there were lots of little welcoming touches during our stay. Get an ocean view room, there's nothing better than sitting on your patio with a drink watching the sun set.”

“This hotel has an amazing staff. Every staff member cares about your experience. And it starts with the greeting at the airport. Every person on the team went out of their way to make sure that we were taken care of. The hotel is wonderful and the location is excellent. The full board is the way to go and 4 days was perfect although we would love to have a couple of more days on the island to relax.”

“We could not have asked for a better hotel in a better location on a most amazing Easter Island. The room overlooked the ocean with incredible sunsets. The bed, bath, and living space were perfect and had every comfort we needed. The included tours were all informative, fun, and well planned to our specific needs.
The breakfast buffet was expansive and dinner in a separate spectacular restaurant was creative, and international, with 5-star food and wine. Wifi was good, the spa was excellent, and the service from the team - Tau, Sergio, Denise, Barbara and the rest of the team was the best. Special call out to manager Josefina who provided a service level beyond compare and made this trip to this special place PERFECTION!”

Alto Atacama | Otherworldly Beauty in the World’s Most Alien Desert
“You have a completely personalized check-in, a tour of the grounds and facilities, and a session with a guide to plan your scheduled activities. The reception staff are outstanding. The laundry came back within hours. Really nice design features throughout.
Rooms are a good size and come with an outdoor covered seating area: soft drinks and fresh water are topped up daily. There are coffee machines and on request, a tea tray is also provided. His and hers bathroom fittings, nice design features in the bathroom also.
Very pleasant bar area with good food and fine dining in the restaurant with a menu changing daily. Excellent wines. Extensive breakfast buffet and hot options as well. Excellent excursions with a very low guest-to-tour guide ratio. Good advice on clothing for the different trips as well. The guides and drivers also rustle up breakfasts and lunches with hot and cold healthy options, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and tea and coffee at breakfast. Highly recommended!”

“The hotel has a beautiful design, but its greatest quality lies in the service, attention, and friendliness of all staff in every aspect of the hotel. The restaurant service is excellent for all meals. A very special compliment to the kindness and service excellence of waiter SAN PEDRO, who turns meal experiences into truly special moments.”

“Highly recommend this beautiful hotel in an amazing setting. The staff were super friendly and made us feel at home from the first moment when they welcomed us at the airport. The daily excursions were led by knowledgeable friendly guides - well organized, very interesting, and absolutely stunning! The food and spa were excellent, and there was plenty of space to relax on the hotel grounds after our daily adventures. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to both explore the Atacama region and enjoy some relaxing pampering.”

“Who knew? In the driest spot on earth, there is a luxury hotel with beautiful rooms, great food, and incredible tours. From the airport pickup (about an hour away) to a very comfortable room with the most amazing view to a gourmet dinner, get ready for a truly unique stay. The included tours are exceptional and well-guided. From stargazing in the clearest of skies to seeing flamingos, geysers, volcanos, salt fields, and breathtaking sunsets (with wine and cheese) activities never cease.
Rooms are really comfortable, WIFI is good, bathrooms with outdoor showers as well, make the stay very pleasant. The staff is beyond helpful, led by Franco and Rosario who were perfect hosts. We had such great service from Mary who picked us up at the airport, to Maria and Jose who guided us throughout our stay to the best of guides - Claudio - and a spectacular massage from David - who could ask for more? This is an out-of-this-world experience - Nayara and the Atacama desert!!!!
